What to expect
What is an online GP consultation?
An online GP consultation is a real-time video appointment with an Australian-registered general practitioner. You discuss your symptoms, medical history and concerns from the privacy of your own home. Your clinician assesses your presentation, provides advice, and documents clear next steps — which may include referrals, pathology requests or care plans where clinically appropriate. You do not need to download software. Your consultation link runs in any modern browser.
Suitability
Who is telehealth suitable for?
Routine primary care concerns such as minor illness, skin conditions or medication review
Patients who need clinical advice but do not require a physical examination
People in rural or regional Australia with limited access to local GPs
Workers who need flexible appointment times without leaving the office
Patients with stable chronic conditions requiring follow-up and care-plan review
Those seeking a structured clinical assessment before deciding on in-person care
Limitations
What telehealth cannot do.
Telehealth is a valuable tool for many primary care needs, but it has clinical boundaries. Safety comes from knowing when a video consult is appropriate and when in-person care is essential.
Physical examination
Some conditions require a hands-on assessment (e.g., chest auscultation, abdominal palpation, joint manipulation) that cannot be performed remotely.
Emergency or acute trauma
Telehealth is not for emergencies. Chest pain, severe bleeding, breathing difficulty, suspected stroke or major injury require immediate in-person care.
Controlled substances
Nexus Health clinicians do not prescribe Schedule 8 drugs, ADHD medication, medicinal cannabis or high-risk weight-loss medication via telehealth.
Complex mental health crisis
Patients experiencing suicidal ideation, psychosis or severe self-harm risk need immediate crisis support and cannot be safely managed by video alone.
Diagnostic uncertainty
When a diagnosis requires imaging, pathology or specialist examination, your clinician will refer you for in-person assessment rather than guess.
Procedures and tests
Wound suturing, skin biopsies, vaccinations, Pap smears and other procedural care must be performed in a clinical setting.
Emergency guidance
When to call 000 instead of booking online.
Telehealth is not emergency care. If you or someone you care for is experiencing any of the following, call 000 immediately or go to your nearest emergency department. Do not wait for an online appointment.
Chest pain, pressure or tightness
Difficulty breathing or severe asthma attack
Uncontrolled bleeding or deep wounds
Signs of stroke — facial droop, arm weakness, speech difficulty
Loss of consciousness or severe head injury
Suicidal thoughts or intent to self-harm
Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
Major trauma or suspected fracture with deformity
If you are unsure whether your symptoms are an emergency, it is safer to call 000 or attend an emergency department than to wait for a telehealth appointment.
