Nexus Health

Medical Certificates

Online medical certificate assessments, conducted by Australian-registered clinicians.

Book a short telehealth appointment for a clinical assessment. Certificates are issued only where clinically appropriate — never guaranteed.

Nexus Health does not provide emergency care. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 000 immediately or attend your nearest emergency department.

Same-day appointments usually available within business hours.

What to expect

How a medical certificate assessment works.

A medical certificate is not a formality — it is a clinical document that certifies you were assessed by a registered clinician and that your circumstances warranted time away from work or study. The process is designed to be efficient, thorough and fair.

  1. 01

    Book your assessment

Choose a convenient time and complete a short intake about your symptoms or circumstances.

  2. 02

    Video consultation

Speak directly with an AHPRA-registered clinician by secure video. The appointment typically lasts 10 to 15 minutes.

  3. 03

    Clinical assessment

The clinician evaluates your presentation, asks relevant questions, and reviews your history to determine whether a certificate is appropriate.

  4. 04

    Certificate or clinical advice

If clinically appropriate, a certificate is issued and sent securely. If not, the clinician explains why and advises on next steps.

Important

Certificates are not guaranteed.

A medical certificate is issued only when an Australian-registered clinician determines, through a proper clinical assessment, that your condition or circumstances justify it. You are paying for the assessment, not the certificate itself. If the clinician does not believe a certificate is clinically appropriate, one will not be issued — and the consultation fee still applies.

What the fee covers

  • A clinical assessment by an AHPRA-registered clinician
  • A secure video consultation with professional medical advice
  • A documented clinical record of the assessment
  • Where appropriate, a medical certificate sent to your email

Suitability

When is a medical certificate assessment suitable?

This service is designed for straightforward, short-term clinical presentations where a brief assessment is sufficient.

Minor acute illness such as viral infection, gastroenteritis or respiratory symptoms

Soft-tissue injuries or musculoskeletal pain that do not require immediate imaging

Mental health flare-ups such as anxiety or depression that are stable and not crisis-level

Carer's leave when you are caring for an unwell family member

Recovery from a minor procedure where your regular GP has already provided care instructions

Short-term absence from work or study due to a genuine health issue

Not suitable

When a certificate assessment is not appropriate.

Some circumstances require a full GP consultation, specialist care, or immediate emergency attention rather than a short certificate assessment.

Medical emergencies

Chest pain, severe bleeding, difficulty breathing, suspected stroke or major trauma require calling 000 or attending an emergency department — not a certificate consultation.

Complex or chronic conditions

Diabetes management, heart disease, cancer care and other ongoing conditions need a comprehensive consultation, not a brief certificate assessment.

Workplace injury claims

Workers' compensation and workplace injury certificates often require specific documentation, physical examination and employer forms that exceed the scope of a telehealth certificate assessment.

Long-term absence

Certificates covering extended leave (more than a few days) typically require a standard GP consultation with documented follow-up and care planning.

Fitness-for-duty with risk

High-risk occupational clearances (e.g., aviation, heavy machinery, commercial driving) may require specialist examination and are not suitable for a brief telehealth assessment.

Requests without clinical basis

If you are not unwell and simply need a document for personal convenience, a clinician will not issue a certificate. Certificates require a genuine clinical indication.

Clinical standards

What clinicians assess before issuing a certificate.

Every medical certificate issued by Nexus Health is backed by a documented clinical assessment. Clinicians do not issue certificates based on patient self-report alone — they evaluate the full clinical picture.

Presenting symptoms

Nature, duration and severity of your current symptoms and how they affect your ability to work or study.

Medical history

Relevant past conditions, medications and allergies that influence your current presentation.

Functional impact

Whether your condition genuinely prevents you from performing your usual duties safely and effectively.

Red flag screening

Brief assessment for symptoms that suggest a more serious underlying issue requiring further investigation.

Appropriateness of telehealth

Whether a video assessment is sufficient or if you need an in-person examination, pathology or imaging.

Documentation standards

The clinician records their reasoning in your clinical notes, ensuring the certificate can be justified if queried.

Emergency guidance

When to call 000 instead of booking online.

A medical certificate consultation is not emergency care. If you or someone you care for is experiencing any of the following, call 000 immediately or go to your nearest emergency department.

Chest pain, pressure or tightness

Difficulty breathing or severe asthma attack

Uncontrolled bleeding or deep wounds

Signs of stroke — facial droop, arm weakness, speech difficulty

Loss of consciousness or severe head injury

Suicidal thoughts or intent to self-harm

Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)

Major trauma or suspected fracture with deformity

If you are unsure whether your symptoms are an emergency, it is safer to call 000 or attend an emergency department than to wait for a telehealth appointment.
